Medellin UNVEILED

Exploring Colombia's Most Vibrant Metropolis

Let’s talk about the best city in the world! I know I’m hyping Medellin up a lot, but I promise it truly lives up to the hype. To set the scene: it’s in a valley so you’re surrounded by luscious deep green mountains everywhere you look, it’s a bustling metropolis with tall buildings and rooftops and despite being a major city, Medellin does a good job of still having tons of green space. It really is so so beautiful – and has even won awards for its innovation in modernizing the city! Medellin has truly become one of the ”it” cities of the world.

Medellin also has great gastronomy. Here you’ll find restaurants with amazing views, and you’ll hardly ever be able to say you had a bad meal. Nearly everyone I encounter who tells me they’ve been to Medellin agrees that it’s Colombia’s best city!

I come on a yearly basis, sometimes multiple times a year. It’s crazy to see how much tourism has increased over the years. It makes me happy because it tells me people aren’t viewing Medellin as a scary place anymore, but at the same time it’s strange being in certain areas (like El Poblado) and hearing nothing but English! Regardless, I encourage everyone to start or continue to visit my parents’ beautiful home city.

VANESSA'S INSIDER TIPS

My Travel Tips for Turks and Caicos

Here are some helpful Medellin travel tips to know before you go:

TBD

TBD

Medellin is not called the City of Eternal Spring for no reason. It’s spring-like weather all year round so you can visit any time. April/May and October/November see the highest amount of rain but again, Medellin’s climate is generally mild and enjoyable all year.

Nearly every tourist stays in El Poblado or Envigado. There’s nothing wrong with that, but for me personally I would not want to stay somewhere abroad where I’m walking around and everyone is speaking English. There are so many tourists here, they’re known as “gringo” neighborhoods. However, these areas do have a ton of hotels and nightlife and restaurants, so I understand the appeal. If you’re looking for something safe that still has that authentic feel, I highly recommend the neighborhood of Laureles!

Medellin is massive. You can walk around within the area you’re staying in, but to get around the city, you’ll need to take an Uber or the metro. Ubers are technically illegal here, so don’t be alarmed if your Uber driver asks you to sit in the front with them so it’s not apparent that it’s an Uber. I love using Uber because it’s inexpensive and I don’t need to worry about a taxi ripping me off. I’ve only used the metro a handful of times but they are a quick and efficient way to get around. I would not use the bus because they aren’t that safe. I would also not use street taxis because drivers will likely scam you.

Is It Safe?

Medellin Solo Female Travel

Safety in Medellin has gotten better over the years but you still need to exercise caution. As a solo female traveler in Medellin, you might unfortunately experience some catcalling and things of that nature. Be extremely careful going out because someone could slip something in your drink to rob you or worse. Obviously, stuff like this happens all over the world, but in Medellin it’s unfortunately more prevalent.

When in an Uber or any car, be weary of any motorcycles getting too close to your car because they usually try to snatch your phone if they see it. I’ve used my phone as I’m walking and been fine, but I also blend in due to my appearance. If you stay in El Poblado or Envigado, you will be okay using your phone in public but still be mindful. Outside of those areas, I would recommend only using your phone inside a restaurant or mall.

Okay enough of the bad stuff – trust me don’t be scared of Medellin! Just follow my advice above and you will be okay. There’s a popular saying here, “No dar papaya,” and it basically means don’t give people a reason to notice you or make you a target. Keep that in mind, and you will be okay!

medellin ADVENTURES

My Recommended Itinerary for Medellin Travel

Medellin has a million things to do, but here’s what I recommend for Medellin:

Vanessa's Quick Thoughts

There’s so much to see and do in Medellin. You can easily spend a few days doing nothing but checking out the restaurant scene and that in itself would be fun! It’s the one place in Colombia I think deserves the most time to explore. Here’s what I recommend for Medellin:

Cultural and Educational Attractions

  • Pueblito Paisa

  • Pueblito Paisa

This is one of my favorite spots to get good views of the city.

Pueblito Paisa is located on Nutibara Hill and is a replica of a traditional Antioquian town. Antioquia is the department that Medellin is located in (think of it as the “county”). So you have the replica, which includes a main square, colorful buildings, and small shops that sells souvenirs, snacks, and crafts.

There’s also a museum that talks about the city which I highly recommend. Note that there’s no longer a parking lot at the top of the hill, so you’ll either need to get dropped off or walk all the way to the top.

  • Comuna 13

  • Comuna 13

Once known as the most dangerous neighborhood in Medellin, this neighborhood has completely transformed into a vibrant community now known for its street art.

I highly, highly recommend going on a walking graffiti tour here so you can learn about its history in depth.

You can easily spend a few hours in Comuna 13 seeing the street performers, eating from local vendors, and checking out the numerous viewpoints.

  • Plaza Botero

  • Half Moon Bay

We went here as part of a boat tour.

Adventure and Outdoor Activities

  • Day Trip to Guatape

  • Day trip to Guatape

This is a super popular day trip from Medellin and not to be missed!

Guatape is a beautiful, charming town known for its colorful buildings and is about an hour and a half from Medellin. You can join a tour for this road trip or go yourself.

The main attraction is La Piedra del Penol. This is a giant rock where you climb 740 steps to the top for breathtaking views. I’ve done the climb numerous times and yes, it’s tiring, but not hard at all! The rock is about 10 minutes outside the town of Guatape.

After you reach the top, come down and enjoy the viewpoints and some food before heading back to Guatape. Take a leisurely stroll through town, visiting its famous Umbrella street.

Another fun activity is to do a boat ride!

  • Visit Salento

  • Seljalandsfoss

    Another stunning waterfall.

Though not as majestic as Skogafoss in my opinion, it’s still really beautiful.

What makes it unique is that in the summer you can walk behind the waterfall.

  • Hike Cerro de Las 3 Cruces

I know, hiking on vacation doesn’t sound fun. But when you’re in Medellin, everything offers such spectacular views that it makes any activity worth it!

This hike is considered moderately difficult because of its steepness. It took me 2.5 hours – some people do it in 20 minutes!

At the top, there are open-air gyms and some food vendors. A lot of people come during sunrise or sunset.

I recommend going before the sun comes up because there’s no shade on the trail.

  • Parque Arvi

  • Parque Arvi

Ok fun fact: I tried to ride the metrocable ONCE in my life and I had a panic attack and I caused a scene and jumped out before it could take off. I am deathly afraid of heights!

Hopefully you aren’t like me, so you can ride the metrocable and enjoy the stunning views!

I recommend going to the Santo Domingo Savio station and from there, taking the K line until the last stop, Arvi Park station. Arvi Park is a giant nature reserve and has a botanical garden, hiking trails, and picnic areas.
  • Paragliding

  • Paragliding

Now surely, after reading about my meltdown trying to ride the metrocable you honestly don’t think I’ve done this – of course not!

For you adrenaline junkies, head about 45 minutes outside the city to San Felix for this activity. Even if you aren’t going to do it, go anyways!

I’ve had a lot of fun going and grabbing food from one of the restaurants and watching people throw themselves off the mountains. There are various restaurants that have stunning views from the hillside.

Leisure and Social Scenes

  • Medellin Nightlife

  • Medellin Nightlife

I don’t discuss nightlife in my other travel guides because when I solo travel, I don’t go out alone. However, I know many people come to Medellin for the nightlife, which is a lot of fun.

For the best nightlife, go to Provenza, which is a trendy neighborhood in El Poblado. It is a street over from Parque Lleras, which I don’t recommend going to anymore because of its infamy – there are lots of drugs and street girls so it doesn’t feel safe.

Another area I recommend for nightlife is La 70 in the Laureles neighborhood, which is an entire street filled with bars or “fondas,” which is equivalent to our version of a club.

Really, malls Vanessa? Yes. The malls in Medellin aren’t just any malls. They’re a big part of the community and local life here. For that reason, the malls here are awesome!

They have tons of great food options (not just fast food), as well as tons of entertainment options.

Some of my favorite malls are Arcadia, El Tesoro, and Viva Envigado.

  • Seasonal Activities

  • Seasonal Activities

There are a couple of things you must do but are only available during certain times of the year.

    • Christmas lights: Colombia is a very Catholic country, and they take Christmas seriously. Medellin is famous for its yearly Christmas lights, which take place from late November to early January. Various streets and parks are dazzling with lights and decorations. The main locations are usually Parque del Rio and Sabaneta (which is a municipality and technically not part of Medellin). I highly recommend going to these two places for the lights!
    • Feria de Las Flores: Known as the Flower Festival, this is one of the most iconic events in Medellin, taking place in early August for about 10 days. During this time, there’s a parade with extravagant floral arrangements carried on the backs of flower farmers. These arrangements are creative and intricate floral displays – it’s really an amazing sight! Also during this time, the city is adorned with floral displays and decorations.

FLAVORS OF THE ISLAND

My Recommended Food Medellin

As I mentioned in my guide on things to do in Turks and Caicos, my mom and I ate out for every meal. I truly don’t think we had a single bad meal on the island – it was all so so good! And the restaurants were very chic and beautiful esthetics.

Here are my recommendations for where to eat in Medellin:

  • Best Views

Located at Jan Thiel Beach, I loved coming here around sunset for dinner. The chicken skewers and slaw were my favorites!

Book a cabana here and enjoy some lunch along with the good vibes. It’s a good spot to spend the afternoon and any place that has yummy sauce for their fries is a win in my book! I’m crazy when it comes to sauces.

I’m crazy about my smoothies and acai bowls – especially when I’m in the sun all day and want something refreshing! They also have vegan food, but I just stuck with the smoothies. This is a must eat in Aruba.

As a picky eater, I always try to find some sort of pasta since it’s a safe bet for me. There are a lot more Italian restaurants in Aruba, but this place came up as one of the top-rated restaurants in Aruba! I took myself out on a fancy date here and treated myself to pasta and dessert.
