Your Mexico Travel Guide for the Perfect Tropical Retreat
Beside Colombia, Mexico is the country I’ve been to the most – a total of 5 times! That should definitely tell you just how much this country has to offer. I think it gets a bad rap because of the cartel activity but honestly, it’s such an amazing country and it’s a shame that gets overshadowed by what’s in the news. There are so many great cities, beach towns, and pueblos (villages). With it bordering the U.S., I don’t think anyone has any excuse as to why they don’t visit! If you’re concerned for safety, check out my section below on Mexico Solo Female Travel.
Mexico is actually the largest Spanish-speaking country in the world and the third largest country in Latin America! It’s a country full of the MOST DELICIOUS food, with a rich history and culture.
I’ve never backpacked Mexico, but instead have visited multiple times for various trip occasions. I’m not sure how long it would take to backpack Mexico but based on where I’ve been so far, Mexico feels like a country you can be sucked into staying forever because there are so many great places!

My Recommended Itinerary for Mexico
As I’ve said, I’ve never backpacked Mexico. My recommended itinerary for Mexico can be done in one trip or split up – completely up to you!
First, start out in the capital, Mexico City. I absolutely love this city! I spent a week in Mexico City and felt like I only scratched the surface, which makes sense because it’s the largest city in North America. I would say anywhere between 5 days to a week is enough time to see the main sights. Maybe if you’re really short on time, 3 days.
From there, hop on a 2-hour flight to the beautiful region of Los Cabos. A resort city on the tip of Mexico’s Baja California, Los Cabos is known for its beaches and nightlife. If you’re wanting to sightsee, I’d recommend at least 3 days, then add on more for beach and pool days.

My Travel Tips for Mexico
Here are some helpful Mexico travel tips to know before you go:
- Visa Requirements: U.S. citizens do not need a visa for stays up to 180 days.
- Local currency: Local currency is the Mexican peso, but U.S. dollars are widely accepted in most tourist places.
- Language: The official language is Spanish, but in most tourist places English is widely spoken.
- Plugs: Mexico uses the same power outlets as the U.S., so no need to bring a converter or adapter.
- When to Go: See my travel guide for each individual city, as they vary.
- How to Get Around: Mexico is huge so to get between places, I would recommend flying. Also from a safety standpoint I’m not sure if driving long distances would be recommended.
- Mexico Solo Female Travel: Personally, every time I’ve gone to Mexico, I’ve never had an issue. When wandering around just be street smart: this means don’t look lost, don’t wear anything flashy, don’t walk into areas after dark that aren’t filled with tourists. Mexico is fine for solo female travel in my opinion, just be cautious! There are a good number of backpackers in the tourist areas, so you’ll be able to find and meet other people. And then of course, lots of people speak English too. Please note I’m referring to places such as Mexico City and Los Cabos, not small villages in the middle of nowhere where there are no tourists.
